Part Time Intensive English Course

15 hours per week in the mornings

This course is available to Australian Residents and students with a Visitor Visa or Working Holiday Visa. Part-time courses are not available to students holding an Australian Student Visa. This course is the same as the Full time Intensive English course, however, due to the reduction in study hours per week, the duration of the course is longer.

Beginner English
The primary aim of the Beginner course is to assist adult English as a Second Language (ESL) learners in the development of study competence, knowledge and linguistic competency necessary to both function in both the international and Australian English speaking communities and to lay the foundation to further their studies in the area of General English.

The Beginner level course has a multi-layered approach, which includes a comprehensive grammar and vocabulary syllabus and incorporates systematic work on listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students will develop the four-macro skills; reading, listening, speaking and writing through an integrated skills approach that incorporates both top down and bottom up learning strategies. At Beginner level a strong emphasis is placed on both explicit grammar instruction and vocabulary building. The aim is to take students step by step through new language and tasks, providing them with all the support they need in order to communicate successfully.

Elementary English
The minimum entry requirement for this course is either an Elementary grade scored on the entrance exam or a successful completion of the Beginner course requirements.
Elementary course is designed to further develop a student’s knowledge and linguistic competency in the use of the English language. This course takes a complete approach to learning English by integrating all skill areas; speaking, listening, reading, writing, pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary. Elementary level has a strong emphasis placed on both explicit grammar instruction and vocabulary building. The aim is to take students step by step through new language and tasks, providing them with all the support they need in order to communicate successfully.

Pre-Intermediate English
The minimum entry requirement for this course is either a Pre-Intermediate grade scored on the entrance exam or a successful completion of the Elementary course requirements.
This course is especially designed to optimise the precious time students have in class to the fullest so that they feel confident to practise what they have learnt outside the classroom. The Pre-Intermediate course takes a complete approach to learning English by integrating all skill areas; speaking, listening, reading, writing, pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary. Students are able to hone in on one skill area, either their weakest skill or a skill which they feel needs to be improved and take the time needed to bring this skill up to the student’s desired level required

Intermediate English
The minimum entry requirement for this course is either an Intermediate grade scored on the entrance exam or a successful completion of the Pre-Intermediate course requirements.
The students enrolling in this course will be international students whose intention is to improve their general English ability. The topics covered in each unit focus on the functional and situational language students need for day to day life. All of the grammar components are able to be learnt within context rather than in isolation, so as to help learners see that effective communication involves achieving harmony between functional interpretation and formal appropriacy by giving those tasks that dramatise the relationship between grammatical items and the discoursal contexts in which they occur (Nunan, 1998:102). The majority of additional resources are ‘game’ orientated. This was deliberately done to increase in level of fluency time, providing real communication opportunities for students to increase their overall English language ability, whilst still remaining on target. The ‘game’ element also increases the level of fun students have whilst learning.

Upper Intermediate English
The minimum entry requirement for this course is either an Upper-Intermediate grade scored on the entrance exam or a successful completion of the Intermediate course requirements.

The Upper-Intermediate course is core class time which takes a complete approach to learning English by integrating all skill areas; speaking, listening, reading, writing, pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary. The course uses a topic based approach which is very communicative and real world, as well as thoroughly integrating all skill areas. The upper intermediate programme also allows students to focus on specific skill areas. Students are able to hone in on one skill area, either their weakest skill or a skill which they feel needs to be improved and take the time needed to improve this skill.

Advanced English
The minimum entry requirement for this course is either an Advanced grade scored on the entrance exam or a successful completion of the Upper-Intermediate course requirements. Students who have completed the EAP with IELTS Intensive course are also eligible to enter this level.

The Advanced course takes a complete approach to learning English by integrating all skill areas; speaking, listening, reading, writing, pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary. Advanced learners need to both revise known structures and continue to extend their knowledge into more complex areas. Students at Advanced level often have more diverse needs than at other levels, for example some students may wish to go to university or sit an exam, while others just want to be able to understand English movies, etc.
